Benefits of Lexan Polycarbonate Sheet
Developed in 1953, Lexan polycarbonate resin is an
amorphous engineering thermoplastic, which is characterized by high levels
of mechanical, optical, electrical and thermal properties. It has become
one of the most widely used engineered materials in the world and has
contributed to product revolutions in virtually every industry.
Colloquially known as “bulletproof glass”, Lexan XL-10 has
been used in many industries but it’s foray into storm protection shutters is the most relevant to our consumers.
Installed as a thin sheet that is protected from UV rays- Lexan is permanently
installed over openings spanning various distances. While larger windows may
require mullions to minimize deflection, Lexan is a perfect choice for fixed,
non-operable windows in any location.
We have installed these shutters across the Carolinas from
Myrtle Beach to Wilmington to Jacksonville. These hurricane shutters
Jacksonville are particularly popular due to the large amount of fixed windows
on military installations as well as manufactured housing. Another prime locale
for our Lexan products has been people who have been looking for hurricane shutters
Topsail Island- where our UV protected panels are guaranteed to not yellow in
the sun.
While other storm protection shutters may be beneficial for operable
windows, Lexan is often the ideal choice for those fixed windows or operable
but unreachable windows. Year round protection from storms and daily stresses
such as recreational damage or criminal activity will leave you with a peace of
mind that is near unparalleled. Our Lexan is also guaranteed not to yellow with
sun exposure (although non-UV protected options are available if necessary for
price constraints or if the use is not in the sun).
Typical properties of the Lexan sheet include:
- High impact strength
- Inherent “water-clear” transparency
- Dimensional stability at elevated temperatures
- Flame resistance
- FDA compliance
- Light weight
- Weather ability
- Formability
Lexan XL-10 sheets combine the impact strength of Lexan
polycarbonate with a proprietary UV-resistant surface treatment on
one side that protects it from weathering. It is the only polycarbonate
glazing material backed by a ten-year limited warranty against yellowing,
loss of light transmission and breakage.
Further Benefits
- Provides up to 25% better thermal insulation than single-panel glass. Double glazing increases the advantage.
- Only 15% the weight of double-panel glass, sheets require less structural support than either glass or acrylic. Its light weight also results in easier handling and installation, as well as transportation cost savings.
- Virtually unbreakable, a sheet has 250 times the impact strength of glass and 30 times that of acrylic.
